These are supplemented by Richard Nunns’s use of traditional ways to mimic the sounds.

This very popular CD, which has been awarded a golden disc, is sampled on the CD that accompanies this book. It has shown the universal appeal of these ancient sounds, now made available to us just as the kōkako does by amplifying the secret sounds of Raukatauri.

The sampler CD with this book includes excerpts from this excellent second production from Rattle Records. This CD introduces some new sounds and adds the voice of Aroha Yates-Smith. Its theme is similar to this book in that it maps the creation story through the world of sound. The accompanying DVD is an essential complement to this book for readers who wish to become players: it shows Hirini and Richard playing many of the instruments and gives further insight into the taonga and the process of creating music.

This delightful booklet and CD set maps the changing bird songs from dawn through to night, with accompanying notes and photographs. These are complemented by imitations of the huia’s song and supporting songs by Rangitaane o Wairarapa. All proceeds go towards the restoration of Mount Bruce.
